why are wisdom teeth called wise?

My gums were sore all day, and when I finally got the chance to check why, I discovered that one of my wisdom teeth is starting to grow in. Oh joy. My mom warned me that I might get a fever from it (what am I, a baby?), but I really hope I won't. And I really, really hope it won't be impacted because gaaaah the hassle of undergoing dental surgery! DDDDDDDD:

Eating would be a chore for the next few weeks, I can tell.
