the scarlet pimpernel (1984)

I thought I wouldn't like the 1982 version of The Scarlet Pimpernel because I didn't like the concept of Chauvelin being Marguerite's spurned suitor. But it actually worked, mainly because of Ian McKellen, I think. If it were any other actor, I don't think it would appeal to me as much.

Anthony Andrews' interpretation of Sir Percy's character reminds me of the one made by Leslie Howard in the 1934 film, although I think Andrews' performance was better. He just looks so freaking cute when he's being foppish while Howard merely looked...foppish. xD

Warning: I tend to be incoherent when I fangirl babble, so this might not make sense to people. :D

Warning 2: I've never read any of the Pimpernel books after The Scarlet Pimpernel, so I may have missed some things that were taken from Eldorado.

- opening part a bit slow for me. oh well
- WHERE IS SIR PERCY AS AN OLD HAG? grumpy!man!Percy is not as satisfying for me. D:
- meep. sir percy's annoying drawl is annoying! xD
- SIR IAN MCKELLEN! <3 you are hotter than hot, heh.
- HA! "your cravat seems a bit...limp." unsolicited fashion advice for the WIN! xD
- eep, your courtship seems to be a bit too fast, innit? percy, you smooth talker you!
- "forgive me, my dear, i had a devil of a time trying to find a suitable basket!" OH PERCY
- HORSES! the league racing across the English countryside in tight, riding breeches! eep. <3
- unfop!Percy is smexier than fop!Percy, oh yes. especially on horseback. xD
- armand, how i love your earnestness and naivete. xD
- jealous!Chauvelin encountering fop!Percy is funnier than funny. "oh, out of my way, you idiot!" <3
- percy is starting to open up to marguerite! but we all know that won't last. D:
- why did they absolve marguerite's guilt re: the st. cyr family? no me likey :(
- "you have a plan? you, who are not capable of holding a thought in your head that is not...trivial?" armand, your n00biness amuses me xD
- close-ups of knitting old crones? PLEASE LET ONE OF THEM BE PERCY.
- YES OLD!CRONE!PERCY FOR THE WIN! (i wonder what the rest of the league thinks, what with percy getting to wear the best disguises? xD)
- ha old!crone!Percy sniffing snuff is one of the cutest images i'd ever seen :3
- i never thought i'd see 'chauvelin-as-a-tragic-figure' actually WORKING. :O oh, percy, you'd better watch out, yo!
- WHAT THEY'RE GETTING MARRIED ALREADY? what IS this, revolutionary france's version of a vegas-style wedding? there was hardly any courtship!
- NO WHY DID YOU HAVE TO SPOIL THE PARTY YOU ANNOYING FART? here be the beginning of angsty!Percy.
- aww, jealous!Chauvelin is even more jealous now. D:
- the dauphin is cuter than cute! too bad they're 'catechizing' him too harshly. the poor boy. :(
- OH SNAP. marital woes, oh no. in a public place, too! D:
- the heart-to-heart talk after the party wasn't angsty enough. and the almost-kiss was too clumsily done! NUUUUU. ;____;
- GAH the matrimony line in front of armand! stop airing your dirty laundry, percy! D:
- eep, andrew as the scarlet pimpernel is funnier than funny. xD
- gah, she just had to ruin their mostly honest conversation by lying to him. D:
- lord tony, subtle you are not. >____> you were caught damn it.
- dance scene! i find that georgian dances are not as interesting to watch as regency ones, though. minuets are boring.
- hee, at the margot stealing the letter scene! andrew's distress makes him look endearingly cute. i luff him <3
- aww, they added a marguerite talking to the scarlet pimpernel bit! margot and percy are really sincere to each other here, which i like very much. it makes up for the disappointing after-party talk thingy they had earlier, heh. and percy looks so tortured here, you can tell he just wants to reveal himself to margot right then and there. i just love tormented!percy.
- i don't get why percy had to stick around even after he found out that chauvelin would turn up in the library. i don't like plotholes. D:
- really clever of percy to leave his note for marguerite right under his portrait with the scarlet pimpernel signet ring. and why didn't marguerite realize that the scarlet pimpernel is part of percy's family crest?
- hah, armand is outwitted by an austrian baron! xD
- AHAHA it's really nice to have relatives in high places, eh, armand? xD
- "i doubt that he slept with his wife in ten years!" "ARMAND st. just!" meep, angry!chauvelin is scary
- i love intense!percy oh yes i do. xD
- why hello thar, lucius malfoy lord tony :3
- whiny armand is whiny. D:
- aww, they didn't show how margot convinced andrew to take her to france
- gah, armand, stop being so obstinate! gah.
- lord tony, i love your morning look. :3
- hm. i wonder which of the league is in disguise this time? *scrutinizes screen*
- heh, the pillow-under-the-blankets trick. works every time. :D
- HA i should have KNOWN it was percy! he ALWAYS wears the best disguises. xD he looks good dirty and in that peasant outfit, much better than when he's in dandy mode. i like. <3
- shifty landlady looks shifty. DON'T GO IN PERCY IT'S A TRAP! :O
- eep, percy has an oral fixation with a phallic object. freudian symbols broke my brain. D:
- yay, marguerite with a petition of clemency! xD
- double yay, percy and marguerite reunion! aww, mush. <3 this is the end of angsty!percy then.
- meh, i don't like the dauphin with platinum blonde hair. he looked much more adorable when he was grungy, for some strange reason
- hah, percy DID get to change clothes on his way to the fortress place. xD
- aww, the poor horses, having to drag a carriage through wet sand. D:
- i LOVE the way anthony andrews contorts his face! "i will come back...to HAUNT you!" = WIN xD
- hee, smug percy is smug. and unsolicited fashion advice for the win once more! <3
- yay, DUEL! they would have done better to include background music for it, though.
- percy seems to enjoy ruining chauvelin's awful clothes entirely too much. does it really look THAT bad? xD
- "take him away...and STRIP him!" hah, down, inner-slasher, down!
- armand makes an AWFUL chauvelin. why am i not surprised?
- the denouement wasn't handled well and ending is a bit jarring, although it's loads better than the 1934 ending. "sink me, the lady's a poet! *smooch*" is loads better than "look, percy! england!" methinks. the latter one made me 'BWUH' at the screen for quite some time.

All in all, I liked this version better than the film with Leslie Howard in it, mostly because Jane Seymour was a better Marguerite than Merle Oberon in my opinion, and Ian McKellen's Chauvelin is good.
