Gakked from [livejournal.com profile] hells_half_acre:

Your main fandom of the year?
Supernatural, with a bit of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Austen for some flavor.

Your favorite film watched this year?
Hmm...this is difficult, as I tend to watch a lot of films, not all of them necessarily released this year. Here's my shortlist: Slums of Beverly Hills, Donnie Darko, Let the Right One In (which is what the perfect vampire film should be, IMO) and Inception. If the question only referred to films released this year, then it's Inception, hands down. I watched that four times at the cinema, and I never got tired of that shit.

Your favorite book read this year?
Beat the Reaper by Josh Bazell, the most darkly hilarious book I've read to date. I bought it when I found it on the top of the "Below P300" pile at National Bookstore. (You'd have bought it too if the cover looked like this.) You'd also be interested to know that the book has its very own trailer posted at youtube.

Your favorite album or song to listen to this year?
If iTunes is to be believed, it's a toss-up between Led Zeppelin's "The Rain Song", Thursday's "Standing on the Edge of Summer", and Lady Gaga's "Just Dance" (...DON'T JUDGE ME). If it isn't obvious, I don't really keep myself updated with today's music: I just stick to what I already know and listen to it obsessively.

Your favorite TV show of the year?
BBC's Sherlock. And Supernatural, which is the only series I followed this year. (I stopped watching SYTYCD faithfully after two of my favorite contestants left the show due to injuries and I couldn't take Kent's small-town boy antics anymore. Alex and Ashley, why did you two have to leave so soon? *sob*)

Your favorite community of the year?
Hmm...I think it'd be [livejournal.com profile] rec_hymenated, because a.) no one can send me enough recs to satisfy my urge to read good fics; and b.) I love Dean and Castiel together whether as friends or lovers, so any community that gives me both makes me squee with glee.

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
BBC's Sherlock, hands down. WHY CAN'T IT BE AUGUST NOW, ARGH.

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
ALEX FREAKING WONG GETTING INJURED ON SYTYCD. God, did I really get the urge to sob uncontrollably when they announced that he ruptured his Achilles tendon.

I also hated the fact that I missed out on Neil Gaiman's visit here in Manila because...well I forgot why I missed out on it, actually. I'm fairly sure it was important, though.

Oh! And Glee's second season! It's such a weak follow-up to the first season (Sue's characterization is all over the place, it's not even funny anymore) and Will makes me want to bash his head in every time he appears on-screen. The only good things that came out of S2 are the Rocky Horror episode and Kurt's relationship with Blaine.

Your TV boyfriend of the year?
I really don't know, haha. Maybe Alex Freaking Wong (if he swings my way), because damn can that man dance. I hope his injury heals well and that he's back dancing his heart out.

Your TV girlfriend of the year?
Kathryn McCormick, who's my favorite female dancer out of all the seasons of SYTYCD. I love her personality, she really connects with her partners, and I envy her legs (they're awesome!). She was really good in her season, but IMO she really shone as an All-Star. My favorite routine from S6 was her contemporary routine with Jakob, but I felt that she really stood out in Dee Caspary's contemporary group number in S7, and not only because she's featured in the choreography (she's the one in the white dress).

Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Oh...I don't know. Maybe when Misha Collins tweeted this picture. I don't know why, but the combination of Jensen's WTF face and his...mini-motorcycle?...and Jared's 'huh?' expression and uber long legs had me squeeing with glee. I love it when "cool" people act like total dorks. :D

The most missed of your old fandoms?
Hmm...I think it'd be RK, because not a lot of people produce quality fic for that series anymore.

The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
I haven't tried watching any new stuff yet because with the amount of fic that I normally read, my course load, and real life shenanigans, I really don't have time to get into new stuff. I did borrow my mom's copy of Modern Family (to be watched over the holidays--hopefully), so maybe I'd get into the fandom? (But I never really get into the 'mainstream' TV show fandoms because I find the fans either too crazy or too vanilla. Um.)

Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
Sherlock, Avatar: The Legend of Korra, and the rest of SPN!
finluithiel: (Default)
Finally found a copy of Ten-Inch Hero. I'll admit that I watched it only because Jensen Ackles was there (such a pretty, pretty man *sigh*).

It was an okay movie. The major problem I have with it is Priestly's ending--I mean, what's up with that? I thought the girl was going to look past the mohawk and the facial piercings, what with the film's message being 'don't judge a book by its cover', but sadly, I was mistaken. It could have been a great film if they didn't give Priestly a makeover, but as it is, I was very disappointed.

7/10

I watched A Clockwork Orange earlier, courtesy of Riza, my source of weird, morbid, and/or macabre movies. I'm still kind of shell-shocked by it, so I couldn't verbalize (or, to be more precise, write down) my reactions to it. The biggest of those shocks was that Malcolm McDowell, he of the Mr. Linderman from Heroes fame, played Alex DeLarge! But that's not what I wanted to talk about.

The film featured a type of operant conditioning that makes the person being conditioned to have an adverse reaction to sex and violence. As I watched the 'conditioning' scenes, I found myself analyzing the experiment, to determine what the US, CS, UR, and CR were. And that was when I realized that I hate B.F. Skinner just as much as I hate Freud.

Gragh. D:

I couldn't believe I haven't heard of this before! (That's what I get for not being so active in fandom, blegh.) You'd never guess that this was a fan-made film with a budget of only £3000, and that's all I will say about it.

Watch the film here.

In other news, I watched 17 Again with my mom and brother earlier. This film made me realize that ZAC EFRON IS ACTUALLY HOT OMG. o______O

Remember this moment, folks. It's a milestone in history.

See, this is why I love them old movies: they make me feel all fluffy inside. Not only do they have different conventions and tropes that aren't applicable to the film industry these days, the posters bear no resemblance to the actors in the film at all. xD

The Return of the Scarlet Pimpernel is the sequel to the 1934 film The Scarlet Pimpernel. Barry K. Barnes plays Sir Percy Blakeney, whose secret identity as the Scarlet Pimpernel is already known by all and sundry. Since this is the case, Citizen Chauvelin (Francis Lister) plots to capture Sir Percy by kidnapping his wife, Lady Marguerite Blakeney (Sophie Stewart, whom, by the way, I think is waaaaay better than Merle Oberon). Add in a saucy Spanish actress, passionate orators of the Republic, and random clueless French soldiers, and you have yourselves a fine romp through the Reign of Terror.

This being a Pimpernel film, Sir Percy gets to wear outrageous disguises with funny accents. I also love that the League gets more screen time this time around, though I still resent the fact that they're only entitled to run-of-the-mill disguises. (However, Anthony Bushell, reprising his role as Sir Andrew Ffoulkes, was excellent eye-candy :D)

Plot-wise, I think this is weaker than its predecessor. Script- and acting-wise, however, it is far superior to the Leslie Howards version. The jokes seem to flow more naturally, and there were less stilted moments in the film. The only beef I have with this is the fact that we don't get to see Sir Percy the Effete Fop; we only get a washed-out version who swings his quizzing glass in time with his drawling.

While no other adaptation could possibly top the 1982 version with Anthony Andrews and Jane Seymour, I prefer this to the 1934 version with Leslie Howards. (Don't get me wrong, I love the Howards version -- it's just that Merle Oberon ruined the film for me.) First, it's because it's more true to the spirit of the book than the 1934 film; second, I actually liked the actor they got for Citizen Chauvelin (his cheeks are so big I wanted to pinch them!). But then again, I'm always happy to watch Pimpernel adaptations, so this film basically made my day for me. :D

I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS. It parodies offensive, racist, and sexist societal norms by being unapologetically offensive and sexist and racist in an over-top-way. Industrial-strength brain bleach is recommended, though, for those who aren't ready to see Jesus belting it out in Heaven. xD

Alan Cumming (Kurt Wagner, Mr. Elton) was brilliant as the Lecturer/Goat-Man/President FDR, and the closing number had me snorting away at the the lyrics:
And once the reefer has been destroyed
We'll start on Darwin and Sigmund Freud
And sex depicted on celluloid
And communists and queens!

In short: go watch! And BEWARE THE REEFER MADNESS!!

The recently-released hi-res screenshots of the new Star Trek movie are amazing. The amount of eye-candy in just one shot dazzled me. To quote my mom, "Huh? They all look good!"

(The cap they have of Spock doing the Vulcan nerve-pinch looks eerily like a scene from Heroes, only this time around, Sylar has weird eyebrows, pointy ears, and a dorky haircut.)

Is Kirk so speshul that he has to wear a black sweater instead of the regulation-standard gold? Also: Eomer, Anamaria, Harold, and Sylar in one film? I AM SO GOING TO WATCH IT.

ETA: I just had a mental image of Karl-Urban-as-Eomer traipsing around Rohan before his coronation, going, "I'm a Marshall, not a ________!" I swear, I'm going to cheer in the theater every single time he'd say that line. I love Bones McCoy in all his curmudgeon-ness. Having Karl Urban portray him only raised his coolness factor by about 23456789098765434567890% 8D

I thought I wouldn't like the 1982 version of The Scarlet Pimpernel because I didn't like the concept of Chauvelin being Marguerite's spurned suitor. But it actually worked, mainly because of Ian McKellen, I think. If it were any other actor, I don't think it would appeal to me as much.

Anthony Andrews' interpretation of Sir Percy's character reminds me of the one made by Leslie Howard in the 1934 film, although I think Andrews' performance was better. He just looks so freaking cute when he's being foppish while Howard merely looked...foppish. xD

commentary, typed as i was watching the film )

All in all, I liked this version better than the film with Leslie Howard in it, mostly because Jane Seymour was a better Marguerite than Merle Oberon in my opinion, and Ian McKellen's Chauvelin is good.

Watched Mamma Mia! with my mom and sister earlier. Found the karaoke-like nature of the lyrics on-screen whenever they started singing hilarious. Wanted to get up and dance but resisted as I could not dance to save my life.

Realized throughout the course of the movie that I know a lot of ABBA songs, only I haven't realized that they were, in fact, ABBA songs. Was in stitches at the sight of Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, and Stellan Skarsgard wearing sequined, tight-fitting, open-chested outifts while singing Waterloo. And spontaneous Firth!character is spontaneous, and is love. :D

I wants me some ABBA music nao plz.

In honor of the release of the first official Watchmen trailer, I made a really simple Watchmen wallpaper:

I have to watch The Dark Knight soon. I promised myself I wouldn't read spoilers on the Internet, and so far I've kept my word. Don't know when my self-control will snap though. I'm a spoiler junkie. xD

Was watching the opening credits of Annie when I realized that OMG TIM CURRY WAS IN ANNIE. Why did I not notice that before?

Also, I slept the entire afternoon away, and not once did I think about my schoolwork. Yay me?

I just finished watching the first Addams Family film. While it's hilarious, I still prefer its sequel, The Addams Family Values, over it -- mainly because it's more macabre than the first one. :D
finluithiel: (Default)
Just watched Battle Royale. By myself. It's like Lord of the Flies, only with machine guns (and a pot lid, ha). I'm sort of proud that I finished it without closing my eyes, though it did come close in one particular instance, and that scene wasn't even gory.

I first heard about the film way back in first year when Paul showed me the 'let's throw a knife at a student to get our point across!' scene during Zoology lab. While it shocked me, it wasn't even the scariest moment in the movie. What creeped me out the most is the fact that the characters are all fifteen year olds, with the exception of the two 'transfer' students. (One of which, Kawada, was played by Yamamoto Taro, who portrayed Harada Sanosuke in Shinsengumi!, a factoid that made me squee with glee.)

Battle Royale isn't for the faint of heart. If blood, flying random body parts, and/or screaming Japanese schoolgirls squick you, then it's definitely not for you. But if it doesn't, it's a film that makes you think. Can you really kill your best friend?

Watch the film to find out. ;p

ETA: Why did I not notice that the actor who played the lead boy in Battle Royale is the same one who played Okita in Shinsengumi!? Granted, the weird samurai topknot would render a lot of people unrecognizeable, but Okita didn't sport that haircut during the start of the series, so I should have been able to recognize him in Battle Royale...

WATCH IT. NOW.

The film had me going all OMGCAPSLOCKCAPSLOCKSQUEEEEE!!!!!!!111111 in my text message to Christine when I finished it because when she said it kicked ass, Iron Man really did kick ass. A lot.

No one wanted to watch it with me when I announced to everyone (well, my dad and my uncle) that I'm going to watch it tonight. So I lured my mom into watching it by promising that Robert Downey Jr played the eponymous role. (She loves Robert Downey Jr. and I think she'd seen every one of his films.) And at the end of the film she agreed with me that Iron Man indeed kicked ass. (I knew there was a reason why she's my mother.)

I felt totally stupid when my brain kept on nagging me about "Strategic Homeland Intervension, Espionage Logistics Directorate" because I knew that I know it from somewhere. Maybe if it was written down I would've recognized it as a backronym of S.H.I.E.L.D. earlier. In any case, I was all "DOI! It's S.H.I.E.L.D.!" when it was revealed. -_______-

And and and! That thing in the end, after the credits? OMG SPOILARZ OF DOOOOM! )

Random outtake:
Mom: *texting my uncle in Denmark* Oh yeah we're all fine here; the girls and I are watching Iron Man later
Uncle: But Iron Man isn't a chick flick!
Mom: Who says we're chicks?!

I read Ella Enchanted earlier. 'Twas nice; it has a different kind of charm from the film based on it -- actually, the film doesn't resemble the novel at all. I still can't decide which one I like better, because they're both cute in their own quirky ways. Heh. :D

I've watched up to episode 5 of the taiga drama Shinsengumi!, and heh, I love their casting choices. Katori Shingo as Kondou Isami was a wise move, but I must say I'm really happy that Odagiri Joe played Saitou Hajime!

The thought of a yakuza!Saitou tickles me, considering the fact he ends up a member of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. I don't know how historically accurate that is (all that's known about his life before the Bakumatsu is that he's from a family of gokenin, low-class samurai), but seeing him hustling people for money made me laugh like a loon.

Also, the way Odagiri-san portrayed him in episode 5 gave me an insight to his motives for marrying then leaving behind Shinoda Yaso for Takagi Tokio...which gave rise to a plot bunny. It'll probably never leave my harddrive as I usually hate the things I end up writing, but but but! Oh, the thoughts racing through my head right now! I'm feeling really giddy, hee!

Watched Sweeney Todd with Christine (high-school-friend Christine, not college-blockmate-Christine ;p) yesterday. Inviting each other to watch films out of nowhere has become a ritual. xD

Anyway, I got a huge kick out of watching it. Watching Johnny Depp demolish Borat and most of the Harry Potter baddies made my day. xD Also: Sacha Baron Cohen's crotch is a SCENE-STEALER. But the lime-green mankini beats the bright blue breeches anytime, hands down. :D

The most creepifying moment for me, though, was when Timothy Spall and Alan Rickman started singing. TIMOTHY. SPALL. AND. ALAN. RICKMAN. SANG. I nearly cried. D:

The Dark Knight trailer is out! YAY! :D I'm squeeing in all kinds of glee because Heath Ledger as the Joker? Best idea evar. XD
finluithiel: (Default)
I wonder where I could get a DVD of the 1934 version of The Scarlet Pimpernel? Because as delicious as the thought of Sir Ian McKellen playing Chauvelin in the 1980's version is to me, the liberties that film took plot-wise makes me vaguely squeamish. (Chauvelin wasn't involved with Marguerite, damn it!)
