30 November 2012 02:42 pm1. My brain is slowly but surely turning to mush. I love Neurology, but it doesn't love me back :(
2. This video just about sums up my grade school days, only mine involved more hopscotch games and sliding down the stair banisters.
3. Decided to try using my watercolor pencils properly, not very happy with the result:

Tonight's bit of randomness: I remember thinking when I first read the Old Testament that there must have been lots of ashes scattered around Israel for all the mourning people to sprinkle on their hair as they rend their clothes asunder and wail their grief into the high heavens. It's only now that I realize they must have gotten the ashes from fireplaces and such. DUH. WTF, prepubescent self?
In other news, I'm so not in the mood to study for tomorrow's exam.

Things that I have realized in the past 24 hours:
1. I can, in fact, now join an SGD session without the levels of preparation I've done in my first two years of med school.
2. My brother has a huge fanboy crush on Ambeth Ocampo, and that's okay, because my fangirl crush on him started when I was around his age and it never went away.
3. My love of genderswap as a trope in fiction is rooted in my love for Doris from Akazukin Chacha and the Filipino dub of YuYu Hakusho, where Kurama was mistakenly identified as female by Filipino dubbers, and realized too late that "she" is, in fact, a he, and was genderswapped into maleness while in his kitsune form.

The more I read Star Trek fic, the more I'm convinced that Vulcan is partly based on Filipino, at least for their terms of endearment.
Cases in point:
Cases in point:
k'hat'n'dlawa - half of each other's heart and soul. This may have been derived from kahati ng dalawa, which kind of doesn't make sense in Filipino because its literal translation is "one half of two [somethings]," but it's a phrase that a non-native speaker would construct. I guess it's meant to convey something along the lines of "someone I am cloven to." If this is the case, I would have used kabiyak ng puso (k'byak'n'pso? heh), the old-fashioned term for spouse, which literally translates to "the other half of [my] heart."
k'diwa - beloved (used to address one's k'hat'n'dlwa). This could have been taken from kadiwa, a Filipino word meaning "a person of the same spirit, essence, or consciousness [as me]". It's a very rough translation, seeing as it's difficult to translate the prefix ka- to English, but I guess this is close enough.
I read somewhere that Mako's character design was partially based on Daniel Henney. I HEARTILY CONCUR AND APPROVE.
Max Nicholson over at IGN speculates that Amon is Cabbage Man's son. I WHOLLY APPROVE OF THIS THEORY.
I love that the "Previously on Avatar" segment at the beginning of the episode played like a news report on old-time television. I'm loving the steampunkness of this series. And the discordant Chinese-jazz fusion music. And the budding Mako/Korra romance.
Basically, I love everything about this episode and this show and oh God can it be next week already so I can watch more? I haven't been this excited about a TV show in ages.

Because classics just bear re-reading again. Star Wars: A New Hope mashed up with Backstroke of the West subtitles.

Anguish makes us realize the unachieved status of the self. The threat of non-sense necessitates hope.

15 March 2012 06:01 pm1. Why I didn't start watching The Voice last season, I will never know. I find it more entertaining than American Idol these days.
2. The construction for TV5's new studio a few blocks away is more than halfway done, and by the time they're through and fully up and operational, I will never be able to get to school without encountering traffic, because, without a doubt, Willie Revillame's fans (may that repulsive man go and die in a fire) will camp out on the street waiting for a chance to get inside and be seen in his crazy-ass, creepy-and-sleazy-and-offensive-as-fuck noontime show. Argh.
3. My schedule, let me show you the madness ( *cries* )
4. JUST A LITTLE MORE THAN TWO WEEKS LEFT.

1. I'm on the verge of burning out. I don't even know how I'm going to go through March unscathed.
2. I am developing a terrifying obsession with X-Men: First Class AU fanfics featuring both Erik/Charles and Hank/Alex. A huge portion of these fics are high school AUs. I don't understand what's happening in my life.
3. In other news, I'm definitely developing some unholy mix of a mood and an anxiety disorder. The only diagnostic criterion I'm missing is impairment in social and occupational functioning, and I think the only reason why that is, is because I'm not allowing myself to be impaired.

Exams and preceptorials to be taken/done this week:
Well, it may be because I was diagnosed with freaking pneumonia.
I had a cold for most of last week (which brought on an asthma attack, so I was a snot-producing, wheezing blob of flesh since last week, blegh), which I attributed to the icky weather (hot during the day, cold as hell at night) and my relative immunocompromised state brought about by my lack of sleepytimes. Then I had a 38.5C fever on Sunday night, which persisted the entire day on Monday (hence the less-than-stellar performance on the exam) and woke up with a 39C fever on Tuesday. Finished the Neuro PE practicals in the morning (which I got through only by the grace of someone/-thing holy) and decided to skip the afternoon lectures on Tuesday so I could get myself checked out. Chest findings are negative at the moment, but the doctor heard rales on one of my lungs (I forgot which lung, I was kind of out of it yesterday), so I may have to get another one later just to confirm the diagnosis for the medical certificate I have to give the school to excuse my absence from the requirements I'll miss this week.
The doctor actually wanted to admit me into the hospital right then and there, but in the end decided not to when she learned that we have a nebulizer at home. So she prescribed me 2 antibiotics (the price of which made my dad's eyes bug out) and changed my asthma meds from salbutamol alone to salbutamol + ipratropium, with an added bonus of salmeterol + fluticasone.
Types of drug classes I'm currently taking: 1 macrolide, 1 second-generation cephalosporin, 2 B2-adrenergic agonists (1 short-acting and 1 long-acting), 1 anticholinergic, and 1 glucocorticoid. Yeah.
My bedside table is occupied by my antibiotics, my inhaler, and a huge bottle of water. The floor beside my bed is littered with discarded pieces of tissue that I was not able to shoot into the trashbin I placed beside me.
Why oh why do I have to get sick this week? D:
Monday: Neuropathology Module Exam 1Stuff that I was able to do:
Tuesday: Neurologic Examination Practicals
Wednesday: Ethics of Brain Death SGD (AM), Hemorrhagic Stroke Case SGD (PM)
Thursday: Neurological Patient Encounter
Friday: Clinico-pathologic Conference case presentation
Monday: Neuropathology Module Exam 1 (which I bombed, boo! D:)But Val, you may ask, why aren't you able to accomplish the other tasks?
Tuesday: Neurologic Examination Practicals (which I aced, yay! :D)
Wednesday: nil

i love my dad
22 January 2012 08:09 pmA conversation with my dad:
Me: *takes his blood pressure*
Him: Why do we need to measure both blood pressure and heart rate?
Me: It controls the volume of blood that enters the kidneys.
Him: So we already have P and V, and T is more or less constant in the body. So what's the n?
Me: All the solutes in the blood. RBCs, WBCs, platelets, proteins...
Him: Great. *leaves room*
Me: How did I know that he was talking about PV=nRT?
UNF x infinity.
10 January 2012 08:40 pmOkay, confession time: I haven't watched anything from SPN S7 beyond 7x02 yet, because I am in COMPLETE DENIAL THAT CAS MAY NEVER COME BACK. However, I still read the spoiler posts over at
ontd_spnparty, mostly because I want to know the exact moment Misha Collins will make an appearance. (It has been said that hope springs eternal.) And the production stills from 7x12 JUST ABOUT KILLED WHAT BRAIN CELLS I HAVE LEFT.

1 January 2012 12:01 amMy entire family decided to go to our condo's podium deck for the New Year's countdown. I don't mean to be a Miss Fussybritches about the whole thing, it's just...damn, the fireworks have been going off since around 8PM and I'm afraid that if I go down, 1) I'll go deaf; and 2) my lungs would try to claw its way out of my mouth.
Besides, the view from my room is fantastic, I don't need to go downstairs to see the fireworks.
In any case, Happy New Year!

scaramouche is one of the best, crackiest, and shortest SPN S6 fix-it fics I've had the pleasure of reading. :D
2. Dragon Age is eating my brain. So far I've parallel-played 3 characters (with different origin stories, natch) up to Redcliffe Castle. One may say I am obsessed. They won't be wrong.
3. Just finished watching the 2011 Big Fat Quiz of the Year. Still can't find it in myself to like David Walliams. He seems so superlicious, argh.
