1. Is it just me, or is the quality of SPN fic declining these days? Is this the end of the SPN fandom as we know it? I can't stand even just reading the summaries posted on my flist these days.

2. Dragon Age: Origins is my new crack. Spent most of yesterday reading the game guide and it took me almost an hour to customize my character's appearance. (I'm still not completely happy with it. IDEK, okay?) I don't know if I want to be a melee DPS rogue or a ranged one. On the one hand, playing my friend's tank character that one time freaked me out. On the other hand, KotOR taught me that I could do melee fighting well. Eh, it'll resolve itself.

3. I only noticed that Mark was reading Fellowship of the Ring when he posted his thoughts on Chapter 3. I'm planning to catch up and read along with him, because I last read LotR back in 2008, and I miss it. (Not looking forward to dealing with Tom Bombadil, though, that man is creepy.)

4. The new default entry page in LJ makes me want to gnash my teeth in anger. How the hell am I going to read my favorite kink memes properly now?

1. The epic love story of Romeo and Juliet Romina and Julius as told through the medium of traditional Filipino verse had me rolling around in stitches xD

2. I first encountered Rafe Bartholomew when I read his article on the Ateneo-La Salle rivalry on the New York Times. Then I finished his book on Philippine basketball the other day. (Which I liked very much, despite not knowing much about the PBA--college basketball is more my thing, heh.) When a google search on the man revealed a promo vid he did for a meet-and-greet in New York last year, I think I fell in love. HAHA.

3. I still haven't studied for next week's comprehensive exams, la la la.

There are way too many Big Bang challenges on my friends list. Reading an unholy amount of fic on top of my classes' required texts, the consultants' powerpoint presentations, the class-produced lecture transcriptions, my own notes, and journal articles for my public health research study made me realize that I read roughly around 350,000 words a day.

350,000 words a day

.

I don't know how I manage to find time for sleep @___@

OR: Which concerns several TV shows.

1. On Supernatural 7x01 )

2. Allison Harvard is back on ANTM: All Stars! I hope she wins this time, I really, really love her <3

3. QI started Series I two weeks ago, and I didn't even notice. I'm really looking forward to the Brian Blessed episode. :D

4. I watch far too many shows for my own peace of mind. I still have to finish Monster and Gintama in addition to all of my shows' new seasons T__T (Sleep? What sleep? SLEEP DOES NOT EXIST IN MY WORLD.)
finluithiel: (Default)
1. Today's moment of weirdness: Our lecturer discussing The Fellowship of the Ring as a model for multidisciplinary care in oncology patients. I spent the last 15 minutes of the lecture cracking up like there's no tomorrow.

2. A recent conversation with my brother:
Brother: Ate, when I have a girlfriend, she must meet 3 criteria. One, she has to be pretty. Two, she has to have long hair. Three, she has to have good oral hygeine.
Me: You're only 8 years old! You have no reason to think about getting a girlfriend!

3. I AM SO TIRED. T__T

30 Day Song Challenge, day 07 - a song that reminds you of a certain event

1/3 no Junjou na Kanjou (1/3 Pure Emotions) by Siam Shade (6th Rurouni Kenshin Ending Theme)

This was the ending theme song for the anime at the time when I wrote/drew a series of RK/Samurai X fanart manga with my friend Liz back in grade school, featuring Kenshin doing laundry and Kaoru being pregnant. Oh, and Tomoe was involved, somehow. (HAHA WHUT.) I will always associate our wacky prepubescent hijinks with this song. :D

30 Day Song Challenge, day 06 - a song that reminds you of somewhere
Over the Hills and Far Away by Gary Moore

If this song existed in the 17th century, I imagine it would be sung in a pub somewhere in Northern England. Because that's what the song reminds me of--the English moors. :D

1. 30 Day Song Challenge, Day 05 - a song that reminds you of someone

Igen og igen by Nephew

This song reminds me of Natacha, my cousin in Denmark, because this song was played everywhere when we were there. The title means "Again and Again," and that's the only part of the song that I understand, haha.

2. This made me think thinky thoughts at 4.30 in the morning. I got it from my class's tumblr. It's like our version of postcard secrets, only there aren't any postcards involved:
Kung mga baso tayo lahat, may mga taong masaya nang kalahati ang laman. Mediocre. May mga taong pupunuin ang baso. Excellent! Pero may mga taong hindi titigil hanggang umaapaw na ang baso. Magis. Aba eh kalokohan pala magpaka-Magis eh. Una sa lahat, sayang tubig. Pangalawa, nakakapagod dahil hindi mo alam kung kailan titigil, kung kailan sapat na.

(If everyone had a glass, there are people who'd be satisfied with filling it up halfway through. Mediocre. There are those who will fill it to the brim. Excellent! But there are people who will never stop until water overflows. Magis. Seeing it that way, being Magis is ridiculous. First, it would be a waste of water. Second, it's exhausting because you don't know when to stop, when you've given enough.)
Am I doing the right thing? Am I meant to be a doctor? The only thing that stops me from giving into those doubts is that I'm happy doing this, juggling medicine, public health, and management classes. Yes, the public health and management classes detract from the medical subjects, especially when I end up working on our research topic instead of studying for our weekly exams, but that's a really short-sighted view of the situation. Whether I end up in a clinic or in the communities, the soft skills that are being taught in those "extra" subjects are important. It doesn't matter how good a clinician you are, no patient will come to you if you don't know how to manage people.

Of course, I could just be rationalizing everything. Ateneo is really good at brainwashing its students. ;p

1. The universe read my previous post and made my day. Hee!

2. 30 Day Song Challenge:

(Forgot to post this yesterday, boo.)
Day 03 - A song that makes you happy

All the Pretty Girls by fun.

The song's lyrics aren't particularly happy, but the mood it elicits from me is strangely uplifting, haha.

Day 04 - a song that makes you sad
Smile Like You Mean It by The Killers

It's a song about growing up, about leaving pieces of yourself behind as you move on in life. There's nothing in this song that ISN'T sad.

Okay, so I was trawling youtube for videos of The Civil Wars' live performances (which you should check out because they're AWESOME), when I had a brainfart: Poison and Wine is Dean and Cas's breakup song OH GOD.

(Joy) Your hands can heal, your hands can bruise
(John) I don't have a choice, but I'd still choose you
(Both) I don't love you, but I always will

Joy sings Dean's parts and John sings Cas's and this is perfect for them WHY ARE THERE NO FANVIDS YET? I want my weekly dose of WAAAAANGST damn it. ;__;

1. 30 Day Song Challenge, Day 02 - your least favorite song

Judas by Lady Gaga:

OH GOD I HATE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS SONG. The video is amusing though. (But then I consider iconoclasts amusing.) This is really weird, as I usually like Lady Gaga songs.

2.This just makes me sad. :(
finluithiel: (Default)
1. My 8-year-old brother, over dinner: "Supervillains are so stupid. Why do they want to blow up the world? They're just going to blow up themselves!"

2. I've decided to do the 30-Day Song Challenge over at FB. And because this journal needs more content, I'm going to cross-post the song entries here.

Day 01 - Your favorite song

Barton Hollow by The Civil Wars:

There's something about the way their voices blend together that makes me want to listen to them all day. It doesn't hurt that the guy looks like a musically-talented version of Johnny Depp. (I love the man, but he should never have been Sweeney Todd *hides from die-hard fans*)

3. I HAD NO IDEA MARK IS WATCHING A:TLA. I AM MIGHTY PLEASED. :D

4. Misha Collins is TROLLOLOLOVELY HAHA.
finluithiel: (Default)
I was looking through the entries at Ateneo Planking, when I found this:

HOW DID HE DO THIS? My mind, it boggles. @__@

1. I was disappointed with the HP7 film. It didn't really suck; it's just that everything was so much more epic in my head. That said, the actor they got for Albus Severus is just precious. I want to squeeze him and keep him in my pocket, hee. :D

2. I resolve to use random song lyrics for the subject line every time I can't think of something to put in there. Just because.

3. I noticed that I'm becoming more and more passive-aggressive as I grow older. I don't know if this is a good thing or not.

4. I should stop going to Fully Booked when I don't have any money. I found out earlier that they finally re-stocked the Arthur Trilogy, which excited me at first. But then I realized that after buying new earphones, splurging on food last night, and buying the travel-sized version of Cluedo, I don't have enough left to buy all three books. DAMN IT.

5. For some strange reason, I woke up with Feel Like Dance by globe running through my head the other day. And since I don't really know the lyrics, my mind substituted "Feeling mo ikaw si Marimar, 'yun pala ikaw si Corazon," instead of whatever the lyrics for the chorus are supposed to be. I love the fact that my brain could still remember the stupid words us kids came up with when we couldn't be bothered to look for song lyrics.

6. #5 prompted me to look for the other Japanese songs from my childhood. So now I can't stop listening to Pizzicato Five's Sweet Soul Revue. Which I am embedding here, because I love the proto-Shibuya-kei look of the video:

1. XR2 by M.I.A. has been stuck in my head for ages.

2. I'm so tired. My circadian rhythm has been off since the start of the school year. On weeknights when I'm not busy, I used to be able to sleep from 10pm until 6am with no interruptions. Now it doesn't matter what time I sleep, I still get up at 2:30am, every morning, without fail. And by the time I'm ready to get back to sleep (~5:30-ish), it's time to get ready for class. Blegh.

On the one hand, I have plenty of time to read ahead/do homework/read fic. On the other hand, I fall asleep in class. I hope my body figures out how to fix itself soon *sigh*

3. We have exams every Monday for the rest of the school year. Goodbye, weekends! It was nice knowing you.

4. One of the Wild Mass Guessing entries for Rurouni Kenshin [warning: TVTropes link!] speculated that RK is set in the Marvel Universe, and the reason why almost everyone seems to be superpowered is because they're all mutants! I desperately want this fic to be written, like, yesterday.

After every Medical Parasitology lecture, I get the urge to gulp down all the de-worming agents I could find. It really doesn't help that I have an inordinate fondness for sushi, sashimi, kilawin, and ceviche. Brr.
finluithiel: (Default)
1. I was sick off and on for the past two weeks. Blegh.

2. Why did the Spanish decide to establish Manila as the capital of the country when it's several inches below sealevel? Every time a typhoon gets together with a low pressure area and decide to make rain babies together, the entire region flies into a panic and Metro Manila turns into a horror-house version of a water theme park featuring muddy water, swimming rats more than a foot long from nose to tail, and cars stuck in traffic and/or floodwater.

3. Also, who decided to start the school year in June, when the goddamn monsoon and typhoon season is in full swing? It makes more sense to mimic the Western academic year and start in September and end in May. At least then classes won't be disrupted by huge-ass typhoons of doom. *sigh*

4. For some strange reason, last night I had a highly detailed dream about my encounter with a weird-ass cab driver last month. He asked me if he could play his music. I said I didn't mind. He then proceeded to root for his cowboy hat(!) under his seat, put on his aviator shades, and blasted Bon Jovi's songs from the 80's at full volume. So I woke up with "Livin' on a Prayer" playing in my head, and that particular earworm has yet to leave. Damn it.

5. FIGWIT = LINDIR? PLEASE LET THIS BE TRUE, I WILL LOVE PETER JACKSON FOREVER IF IT IS. The more I hear about The Hobbit film, the more I look forward to it. Hee!

oh god

I thought I was ready for the new school year. I was kind of excited, even. Then I saw my schedule for the next 4 weeks:
in which a supposedly non-clinical module has far too many clinical subjects for my peace of mind )

Goodbye, personal life. I think we'll only meet again once I've adjusted my sleep schedule from 4.5 hours a night to just 3. (Methinks the tabs I'm going to accumulate for all the upcoming big bang fics will number in the hundreds, I can already tell. D:)

...than to look for TV ads on youtube. And then laugh hysterically and/or bask in the glow of warm and fuzzy feelings elicited by said ads. I love watching commercials. :D

1. Nikki Gil's first Coca-Cola commercial, the Filipino version of the "I Wish" ad. I infinitely prefer this version to the US one, mostly because it feels very much like a busy Manila street, sans the crush of the crowd, heh.

2. Bingo Chocolate Cookies. Their fake British accents crack me up xD

3. Selecta Cornetto "Video Store". This will never fail to reduce me to fits of laughter xD

4. Nestle celebrating 100 years of selling their products in the Philippines. I love love love their tagline. 'Ang sarap pag nahanap mo ang iyong kasambuhay sa habambuhay.' I am such a sap, heh.

5. McDonalds, "BFGF". The little boy is just too cute to be borne xD

In case you've forgotten, you have comprehensive exams on Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, and Histology all to be held on Monday. That's a lot of exams crammed into just one day. And you've barely even cracked open your textbooks.

Stop watching and/or reading articles, talks, and lectures about economic and social reform. Stop thinking thinky thoughts that have nothing to do with what you're supposed to be worrying about. While they are indeed interesting and edifying and triggers your inner activist to get up and save the world one injustice at a time, it would not really help you in the long run if you fail your exams.

Sincerely yours,

Superego
