star trek (2009)
Caveat: Before you read this entry, you must realize that (a) there is much use and abuse of CAPSLOCKSQUEE; and (b) I'm not a Trekkie purist in any sense of the word. So if you didn't like the movie on the sole basis of it messing around with canon (how could you add to Trekkie canon these days, anyway, with old GR gone for almost two decades now?), then you probably wouldn't like my opinion.
That said, let the squeeage begin!
Special effects were amazing. So was the plot and the pacing and...basically everthing about the movie was amazing. THIS IS THE MOST AWESOMEST AWESOME MOVIE EVER! BEST MOVIE OUT OF THE FRANCHISE! It beats both Wrath of Khan and The Journey Home on my Awesomest Star Trek Movie Scale! I watched it in IMAX and it made me not want to watch films in normal cinemas anymore. Heeeee. Also, it's awesome in an "OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU DID THAT AND IT WORKED" way!
Spock getting in touch with his human side while being a logical Vulcan? Unheard of in the original, but I'm finding this iteration of the Star Trek 'verse more and more appealing the more I think about it. I mean, Spock and Uhura? SPOCK AND UHURA? I've always been of the opinion that Spock's soul belongs to Kirk and Kirk alone. (Because both of them have this forbidden love thing, which is why Kirk has his many one night stands and Spock doesn't have any relationship with a woman outside of work and pon farr and WHY AM I AIRING MY THOUGHTS ON YAOI?) But this. THIS. I NEVER ACTUALLY THOUGHT IT WOULD WORK AND IT DID IT DID! They've been getting it on WHILE SPOCK IS STILL UHURA'S TEACHER! I wanted to fistpump and dance around in glee at the theater. Although I guess it removed some of the angst Spock had during TOS about being half-human, half-Vulcan, since he seemed to not have gone through koon-ut-kali-fee (hah! I caught that near the beginning of the film) and therefore not have to wait until pon-farr before dealing with his 'urges'. But still. STILL. Spock/Uhura FTMFW. xD
Christ Pine as James T. Kirk is AMAZING. I never thought he had it in him, the only films I've seen him in are Blind Dating and Princess Diaries 2. He put in JUST the right mix of humor, arrogance, and intelligence to the character, and now I'm looking forward to whatever new film they're gonna bring out in this continuity. And Scotty! Scotty/Alien Dude is my new OTP. <3 And! AND BONES! Bones and his "I'm a doctor, not a _________!" routine! PLAYED BY EOMER! *is ded from glee* Also, Chekov was veeeeery adorkable. I wanted to hug him and make him look for a 'nuclear wessel'. Heeeee. Sulu was great (entry scene was PRICELESS), but phasers aren't set to 'FABULOUUUUS'. D: I miss you George Takei. John Cho is a great successor, but no one could top your Sulu.
Verdict: Awesome movie. Go watch it! You don't have to be a Star Trek fan to appreciate this Star Trek movie. It's a complete reboot for the series, a reboot I'm looking forward to following. They really ARE boldly going where no one has gone before. I can't wait to see what they'll come up with next. :D
