poetry -- shadows

I was cleaning up my harddrive, and I chanced upon this. Wrote it more than two years ago, and, reading it once again, I cringed. It didn't seem as sucky back when I first wrote it, but then again, I have the advantage of hindsight. Anyway, I decided to fix it and post it here. The original version can be found at fanfiction.net.

BTW, it used to be an Howl's Moving Castle fanfic. I modified it so that it become original poetry. XD

Title: Shadows

Summary: Ponderings on the nature of love and shadows

faerie-tale-love and shadows

He watches as shadows play across the ceiling
and thinks that they are like love.
Not the love from faerie-tale books -
not quite that -
it is too pure too shallow too easy to fall out of;
no this is not faerie-tale-love
this is real-life-love
and it is simpler yet far more
complicated.

Just as shadows are.

tangibility

Shadows are intangible
yet they exist everywhere.
An object is held against light
and shadow is cast on the ground;
a hint -
nothing more -
of what the object really is.
They are unreal but they are there
and to deny it is to deny
the existence of light and shadow -
pure folly -
for what is shadow without light
and light without
shadow?

Love is intangible.

what it is

Shadows are comforting.
They show us that what we have
is still ours and what we don't have
is still not ours.
They show us the things we like
and the things we do not like.
Beauty ugliness -
what are they to shadows?
They are but markers
to show that they still exist.
Everything that is real casts shadows -
shadows we see and do not see.
If there are no shadows then
there is no
light.

With no light there is no love.

obscurantism

He revels in the greyness
of shadows -
how could he not?
The shadows hide him
from glaring light
from too much reality;
because shadows are real
yet otherworldly...
just like him.

He drowns himself in love.

shades of grey

He watches as the shadows
play on the canvas that is her face
light and dark intermingling
creating shades of grey.
Love is in shades of grey -
obsessive passionate fraternal superficial -
love hides things yet does not stay hidden.
Shadows hide and distort details -
color texture shape size.
Love hides the truth -
faerie-tale-love make-believe-love -
yet exposes things unseen;
love is as real and otherwordly as shadows.

Love and shadow
shades of grey.

i've never been in love but i've sure been under a shadow..if love and shadow may be considered the same,then there would be no reason to love..but there is...just as a shadow will always be present if there is light and "something" in between..ang labo ko ano? pano nga ba iibig si anino kay araw? kung kelangan mayroong nasa bagay sa gitna palagi??--jamie
