ADM 102: Introduction to Ateneo-La Salle Games
Thu/Sat/Sunday, 4:00 PM, Araneta Coliseum

Course Description
The course introduces the student-cheerer to the dynamics and principles of the Ateneo-La Salle rivalry. The course employs both theoretical and application dimensions. The theoretical phase exposes the student to the history of the rivalry, the tradition of cheering, the construction of the ideal Atenean 6th Man, and other theoretical concepts.

The application phase on the other hand requires the student to put into practice all the theoretical principles. These practices include, among others: effective skills in lining up for the games, cheering (pre-game, during the game, half-time and post-game), jeering, heckling, creating effective posters and banners for one's favorite players and posing and smiling for Fabilioh.com.

Just watched Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. (Yes, I'm late for the party. Shush. ;p) I love it. Love love love it.

I wanna watch it again. xD

I was searching for something on the PsyArticles database with the keyword 'clothing', but for some strange reason, a clinical case study of a schizophrenic Filipino man who emigrated to the US came up. I read the article, and there is no mention of the word 'clothing' which weirded me out because why did it come up in the search results?

Anyway, while I was reading the case study, the following passage struck me:
Mr. A's visual and auditory experiences could be seen as fulfilling a role similar to that of the imaginary play figures that children often create for companionship during their earlier years. These figures, along with his shamanic calling, were interpreted to be culturally normative by the patient, and could be interpreted as such given the shamanic and animistic traditions evident in Filipino culture. In contrast, his symptoms were atypical of those associated with schizophrenia in the United States, which are typically stressful and upsetting1 (emphasis mine).
It reminded me of something my teacher for one of my previous psych classes said: schizophrenics here in the Philippines are usually less distressed than their American counterparts. I don't remember what was said that explained exactly why that is so, but what I do remember is that I felt dissatisfied with the answer.

Regardless of my teacher's explanation, I think that it's because people who see or hear spirits are taken matter-of-factly here. They aren't seen as mentally ill people, they're just normal human beings who only happen to see or hear things not everyone can. The fact that these people can communicate with spirits or what-have-you doesn't necessarily mean that they're psychotic since they can still function normally in everyday situations. So schizophrenics who have full-blown hallucinations are merely seen as people who have the same 'gift' for seeing the supernatural as other 'normal' people; they merely possess this 'gift' to a greater degree. Hence the lack of distress.

I could go on and on about this topic but I have other things to do. Gah. Why couldn't I write a paper on something similar to this and not our lab report for our experiment on how clothing affects the perception of the person wearing it? Ang gasgas na ng topic na 'yon!

WOO-HOO! WE WON!

Just got back from eating dinner out with Banzy, Mirza and Dea at Eastwood, after watching the AdMU vs. UST game at Araneta. 'Twas muy fun! Not only did we win, we were shown on TV twice! Hee. xD

squeeage )

I'll post pictures once Rai and Banzy share it with the rest of us. (I don't have a camera, boo.)

My voice sucks right now. I've been cheering non-stop for more than two hours, since NU had a distinct lack of supporters (the game before ours was NU vs. FEU, and NU won, yay!). It really didn't help that after eating dinner at Falzoni's we had dessert at Dairy Queen. Ice cream is love, but it ruins one's voice after a game. xD

OH GOD I wanna watch the next AdMU vs. DLSU game! I'm so excited! 8D

So, I just watched Blackadder the Third, specifically the episode with the Scarlet Pimpernel spoof, and OH GOD I just had a brain fart!

I want to read a Scarlet Pimpernel/Persuasion crossover. Badly. I mean, think about it: Sir Walter is exactly the kind of man whom Percy would surround himself with during parties while he's playing the fop. Or they'd at least be nodding acquaintances. Heck, they're even in the same age group! Percy would be in his 50's, same as Sir Walter, at the start of Persuasion, but I don't want to read about their interactions when they're old men already. No, it would be much more entertaining to imagine them at the height of their (or at least Percy's) foppishness. xD
finluithiel: (Default)
I thought I wouldn't like the 1982 version of The Scarlet Pimpernel because I didn't like the concept of Chauvelin being Marguerite's spurned suitor. But it actually worked, mainly because of Ian McKellen, I think. If it were any other actor, I don't think it would appeal to me as much.

Anthony Andrews' interpretation of Sir Percy's character reminds me of the one made by Leslie Howard in the 1934 film, although I think Andrews' performance was better. He just looks so freaking cute when he's being foppish while Howard merely looked...foppish. xD

commentary, typed as i was watching the film )

All in all, I liked this version better than the film with Leslie Howard in it, mostly because Jane Seymour was a better Marguerite than Merle Oberon in my opinion, and Ian McKellen's Chauvelin is good.

Götterdämmerung has come and gone...and I survived. If only just.

Luck of all lucks, I got the thesis statement that I studied the least. Although I'd been smart enough to 'study' that last. Recency effects, yo! (I knew there was a reason why I like studying Cognitive Psych. It's easy to apply it in real life! xD)

Also, right after taking the orals test I went to my TH121 teacher's office and chatted with her a bit. Until TH131 teacher went in to talk to her, that is. Of course, me being a total coward, I fled immediately. The last thing I heard was TH131 asking TH121 if I was her student last semester. MEEP. >____<

But seriously, I am SO glad that that part of my life is over and done with. I can sleep for real this time around!

Monday shall be the time when I'd take my PSY107 and PSY110 long tests, as well as a quiz (read: another zero) on Decartes' Meditations on the First Philosophy for PH101.

Tuesday is also known as Doomsday. Because: Dacanay orals WTF. I totally did not think and ask someone to sign up for me, thus consigning me to oral exam hell.

The only good thing I could see about that orals schedule is that it isn't going to be at 6.00 in the morning. I'd rather die than have my orals at that time.

How I absolutely hate it whenever exams pile up on top of each other.

Excuse me while I study like a wild thing possessed.

HA! We got a FOUR on our group reflection paper for TH 131! We got a four. For a paper. In Dacanay's class. It's worthy of celebration, it is! *dancity dance of glee*

Now, on to kicking ass in other subjects.

Watched Mamma Mia! with my mom and sister earlier. Found the karaoke-like nature of the lyrics on-screen whenever they started singing hilarious. Wanted to get up and dance but resisted as I could not dance to save my life.

Realized throughout the course of the movie that I know a lot of ABBA songs, only I haven't realized that they were, in fact, ABBA songs. Was in stitches at the sight of Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, and Stellan Skarsgard wearing sequined, tight-fitting, open-chested outifts while singing Waterloo. And spontaneous Firth!character is spontaneous, and is love. :D

I wants me some ABBA music nao plz.

I have to watch The Dark Knight soon. I promised myself I wouldn't read spoilers on the Internet, and so far I've kept my word. Don't know when my self-control will snap though. I'm a spoiler junkie. xD

Multi-fandom recs, this time. (Man, I've missed doing this. The last proper rec post was posted November last year. :/)

CATEGORY: Sharpe
Title: Sharpe's Descent
Author: [livejournal.com profile] farothiel
Rating: T (PG-13)
Genre: General
Status: Work-in-Progress
Summary: Follows on directly from the end of Sharpe’s Eagle (book, not film). Sharpe’s life is turned upside-down by an unexpected arrival.
Comments: Delightful and slightly cracky. Mostly about Sharpe and Wellesley, with a bit of Hogan thrown in. :D Be warned, though: the author updates sporadically. Not recommended for impatient people.

- - -

CATEGORY: Dexter
Title: Water Through a Rusted Pipe
Author: Pirate Perian ([livejournal.com profile] thunderemerald)
Rating: PG
Genre: General
Status: Complete
Summary: Deb sees a side of her brother that she's never seen before, and asks some awkward questions. Dexter, in answering them, decides to experiment with truth.
Comments: A post-S2 scenario: what if Deb finds out about Dexter's late night escapades? This fic's sequel, Something is Cracking, is also not to be missed.

Title: Tiny Monsters
Author: [livejournal.com profile] linaerys
Rating: M (R), for violence
Genre: General
Status: Complete
Summary: When left alone with Dexter following the apocalypse, someone begins to suspect he’s not what they thought he was.
Comments: Part of the end of the world challenge at [livejournal.com profile] apocalyptothon. Lovely fic.

- - -

CATEGORY: Pirates of the Caribbean
Title: Pretending to Save Her
Author: Jedipati ([livejournal.com profile] immortal_jedi)
Rating: T (PG-13)
Genre: Adventure
Status: Complete
Summary: The crew of the Black Pearl attacks Port Royal. The first mate is surprised to see a familiar face. Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann are both taken captive. CotBP AU
Comments: I love this scenario. The plot isn't your run-of-the-mill AU. However, the writing style is something I had to get used to, but it's just a matter of preference, I suppose.

- - -

CATEGORY: Lord of the Rings
Title: On the Wings of the Storm
Author: Lialathuveril
Rating: T (PG-13)
Genre: Romance/General
Status: Work-in-Progress
Summary: The year before the Ring War, Princess Lothiriel of Dol Amroth is sent to Rohan by her father to seek shelter from the storm brewing in Mordor. There she meets Éomer, Third Marshal of the Riddermark. Unfortunately they do not hit it off...at first.
Comments: The reason why I just love Eomer/Lothiriel fics is because there's no established canon for their romance, not even in the Unfinished Tales. Which is really a shame, since Eomer is one of my favorite characters. Anyway, I love this fic because everyone's characterizations are spot on, and the author's interpretation of Lothiriel is so good that I can really see the possibility of romantic frisson between her and Eomer. What I mean to say is, their romance isn't contrived. It feels natural. It's definitely one of the best LOTR fics I've read.

CATEGORY: Bleach
Title: Brightly Burning
Author: icefalcon ([livejournal.com profile] anaelau)
Rating: K+ (PG)
Genre: General
Status: Complete
Summary: He had always intended to join the fourth division, and he’d beat up anyone who said different.
Comments: One of the best Isshin fics out there. Totally a must-read for fans of the Kurosaki papa. Set pre-series.

Title: Contagion
Author: incandescens
Rating: M (R)
Genre: Adventure/Horror
Status: Work-in-Progress
Summary: Some things which are forgotten should be forgotten. Except when they are awakened, and then nobody is safe. Sixth Division begins its investigation. Set after Ichigo's group returns from Soul Society, with possible spoilers.
Comments: Quasi-sci-fi explanations for Hollows make my day. Really. And the character dynamics make me squee, especially the Nanao/Ukitake/Shunsui interactions. :D

Title: Project Tatterdemalion
Author: Vathara
Rating: M (R)
Genre: Sci-fi/Horror
Status: Complete
Summary: What if Hollows were caused by an alien virus? Sci-fi AU.
Comments: As I said, sci-fi explanations for Hollows make my day. The author has a way with blending 'science' with Kubo-logic, and the fact that the Kurosaki papa is geeky in this fic makes me squee with glee. Repeatedly. Definitely a must-read.

- - -

CATEGORY: Crossover
Title: Mind Over Matter
Author: sherlock21b
Rating: K+ (PG)
Genre: General/Drama
Status: Complete
Summary: The mutant telepathic attack on the world's population in X-Men: United has some unusual repercussions at Princeton-Plainsboro. House and X-Men crossover.
Comments: Come on. House and X-Men. You know you want to.

Title: Marking Time With Hyper-Vodka
Author: [livejournal.com profile] ladyyueh
Rating: T (PG-13)
Genre: General
Status: Complete
Summary: Malcolm Reynolds, Jack Harkness, hyper-vodka, and time.
Comments: Captain Jack and Firefly will always be a good combination. *nodnod* A very bittersweet fic. No slash for Captain Jack, though.

Title: Throwback
Author: [livejournal.com profile] shadowwraith99
Rating: K+ (PG)
Genre: General
Status: Complete
Summary: The origin of the Prince line. Harry Potter/Starudust
Comments: Why Prince Septimus of Stormhold looks so much like Severus Snape. A crossover that could actually happen. Definitely a must-read.

Title: The March Girls
Author: E. Snoopy
Rating: K+ (PG)
Genre: Family/Drama
Status: Work-in-Progress
Summary: Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Persuasion meet Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott, in this 19th century New England variation.
Comments: Little Women is one of the first "serious" books I ever read, and crossing it over with Austen novels made me squee with glee when I saw this gem of a fic on FF.net.

meh.

Was re-watching "Last of the Time Lords" earlier. Snerked at Jack running around guns blazing. "I love Jack going all commando-like," I thought. "Eep," my mind squealed further.

But then I realized: knowing Jack "I'd screw anyone and anything that moves" Harkness, he would go commando. Every. Single. Day.

...eep. I can has hot smexy Captain Jack fic pretty please?

Yesterday, this made me late for my first class. We were not amused.

Today, this one in fact did not make me late for class, but it made me pay more than I usually do for my ride to school.

I'm starting to think that the Ayala Tunnel is cursed.
